The International Conference on Photonics and Imaging in Biology and Medicine (PIBM) is one of the largest series international biomedical photonics conferences in Asia. It was initially held at HUST biyearly since 1999. After three times held in Wuhan (1999, 2001, and 2003), it was hosted once in Tianjin (2005), and then, back to Wuhan yearly since 2006. PIBM is designed to bring together scientists, engineers and clinical researchers from a variety of disciplines engaged in applying optical sciences, photonics and imaging technologies to problems in biology and medicine. The scope of this conference ranges from basic research to instrumentation engineering, to biological and clinical studies. It is recognized as one of the largest and most comprehensive international conferences in China, and represents the highest level of the worldwide research in this field.

In the past years, 8 volunteers of proceedings with totally 705 papers were published by the International Society for Optical Engineering (SPIE), a volume of 75 papers was published by World Scientific Publishing Co., and a volume of 53 papers was published as Conference Proceedings by Institute of Physics (IOP). Most proceedings were indexed by EI Compendex and SCI. Some excellent papers were recommended to publish in the peer-reviewed Journal of Innovative Optical Health Sciences (JIOHS), indexed by SCI and EI Compendex.
