On March 2, the Department of Science and Technology of Hubei Province approved the establishment of the Innovation Institute for Carbon Neutrality of Hubei Province. Led by HUST, the institute is jointly established by the provincial universities, such as WHU, and leading industrial forces such as CHN Energy. Furthermore, this institute is focused on creating national green and low-carbon technological innovations, and driving the Yangtze River Economic Belt to form an internationally leading carbon-neutral strategic emerging industry cluster.
The institute is targeted at seven major directions, including carbon peaking and carbon neutralitystrategictink tank, innovation of key technologies for carbon capture utilization and storage, new energy technology, energy storage technology, new power system technology, pumped storage technology, and energy-saving technology,thus striving to build a world-leading carbon neutral project. Through three years of construction, the technological innovation center and strategic tink tankwill be built into one of the crucial systems in the carbon-neutral field. Generally speaking, it opened a key channel for the transformation to enterprises, comprehensively stimulated the innovation ability, and made it possible to lead the trend of the cutting-edge carbon neutralization technology.
The institute will bring together the strength of HUST, relying on the State Key Laboratory of Coal Combustion, the State Key Laboratory of Advanced Electromagnetic Engineering and Technology, Wuhan National Laboratory for Optoelectronics, the Wuhan National High Magnetic Field Center, the Sino-US Clean Energy Research Center, and the China-Europe Institute of Clean and Renewable Energy to build a world-class carbon-neutral technology innovation institute. At present, there is a talent echelon including 5 academicians, which will concentrate on superior resources to break through the major carbon neutrality bottleneck.
It is reported that the institute has been carrying out the key special project of "National Quality Infrastructure System" --the research and application on leading typical industries to study the basic collaborative control technology system of carbon peak quality, and the project of the third phase of the intergovernmental international scientific and technological cooperation Technical Capability Improvement and Innovation of Carbon Capture Utilization and Storage Industry which is collaborated by China and the USA. On the next stage, the institute will introduce and cultivate elite talents in the field of carbon neutrality and comprehensively enhance the innovation ability of carbon-neutral science and technology and energy equipment.
