Wuhan Optoelectronics Forum 119: Dual frequency interferometric fiber-optic sensing technology

Time:Jun 17, 2019

WUHAN, China (May 11, 2017) - Wuhan Optoelectronics Forum No. 119 was successfully held in Auditorium A101 at Wuhan National Laboratory for Optoelectronics (WNLO) in the morning of May 11. Prof. Bai-Ou Guan from Jinan University delivered an exciting talk entitled Dual frequency interferometric fiber-optic sensing technology. Dr. Jian Wang, from Optoelectronic Devices and Integration Division of WNLO chaired the forum. Prof. Xinliang Zhang, Deputy Director of WNLO, awarded Prof. Guan the forum medal.

Fiber-optic sensor converts measurands into a change in amplitude, phase, wavelength or polarization of light in optical fiber. It has advantages of small size, light weight, immune to electromagnetic interference, remote sensing capability, and has been widely used in civil engineering, aerospace, oil & gas, electric power, and so on. In this talk, I will introduce a new type of fiber-optic sensor named dual frequency interferometric fiber-optic sensor, which integrates the advantages of interferometric sensor and wavelength-encoded sensor. It not only provides high resolution, but also can be easily demodulated and multiplexed. We will report our recent works on this type of sensing technology, including the fabrication of ultra-short dual frequency fiber grating laser, its response to external perturbations, the transducer design, and the sensor multiplexing. Furthermore, we will introduce the dual frequency interferometric acousto-ultrasonic sensors and their applications in biological photoacoustic imaging, etc.

Bai-Ou Guan received the B.Sc. degree in applied physics from Sichuan University, Chengdu, in 1994, and the M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in optics from Nankai University, Tianjin, in 1997 and 2000, respectively. From 2000 to 2005, he was with the Department of Electrical Engineering, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Hong Kong, first as a Research Associate, and then as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow. From 2005 to 2009, he was with School of Physics and Optoelectronic Engineering, Dalian University of Technology, Dalian, as a Full Professor. In 2009, he joined Jinan University, Guangzhou, where he founded the Institute of Photonics Technology. His current research interests include fiber optic devices and technologies, optical fiber sensors, biomedical photonic sensing and imaging, and microwave photonics. He has authored and coauthored more than 160 papers in the peer-reviewed international journals and presented 60 invited talks at international and national conferences. He received the Distinguished Young Scientist Grant from Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) in 2012. He is a member of IEEE and OSA, and has served as General Chair/Co-Chair, Technical Program Committee or Subcommittee Chair/Co-Chair for over 10 international conferences.
