Abstract:

From a brief review of the broadband access and fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) technologies, this talk will summarize the existing transceiver technologies in the optical network unit (ONU) under different network architectures and system requirements. Some recent development on transceiver designs involving hybrid integrations will also be covered. After an overview on the challenges and opportunities that we are facing in developing the next generation photonic components for ONU transceivers, this talk will reveal our research focus on a few primitive semiconductor laser designs that might lead to significant fabrication cost reductions.
