WOYF 15: Thin crystalline silicon photovoltaics for next industrial revolution

Time:Sep 21, 2018

Speaker:Wensheng Yan , Karlsruher Institut für Technologie,KIT

Invited by:Prof. Gan Zongsong

Time:10:00-11:30, September 25, 2018
Venue: A101

Abstract:

The crystalline silicon (c-Si) solar cells have dominated the global photovoltaics (PV) market of more than 90% share. At present, world-record c-Si solar cell efficiency is already up to 26.7%, which is approaching the practical Shockley-Queisser (S-Q) efficiency limit of 29.4%. For commercial 180 μm-thick Si solar cells, there are several key drawbacks preventing from maximizing industrial application potentials: For instance, (i) the Si material alone occupies as high as approximately 40% of module cost; (ii) The c-Si PV module is very heavy, which greatly constrains its roof application range; (iii) The present thick c-Si cannot be integrated on flexible substrates (like thin film solar cells). Thin- and ultrathin c-Si solar cells present an innovative technology for next PV industry revolution. In this talk, I will review Si solar cells first and then present our research progresses on thin-and ultrathin c-Si solar cells presenting the highest conversion efficiency in the research area. Finally, I will briefly introduce the opportunities of direct laser writing method in ultrahigh efficiency solar cell research area.

Biography:

Wensheng Yan received his PhD degree from the Major of Microelectronics, the Physics Department of Nanjing University in 2008. Since 2009 to the present, he has worked on silicon solar cells across Singapore, Australia, and Germany. As first PI, he has independently undertaken a couple of overseas funding. In Germany, he was a group leader from 2015 to 2017 and now is in a German Research Foundation (DFG) PI position. He was acting session chairs in several international conferences and regular reviewers for above 30 academic journals. So far, Wensheng Yan has won quite a couple of domestic and international awards including outstanding doctor degree dissertation of Nanjing University, China; Outstanding doctor degree dissertation, Jiangsu province, China; National outstanding doctor degree dissertation (Nomination), China; Bayu scholar distinguished professor of Chongqing city (Provincial level), China; Australian Renewable Energy Agency Postdoctoral Fellowship, Australia; IAAM Scientist Medal; and Humboldt Research Fellowship for Experienced Researchers (Senior fellow), Germany. In parallel, Wensheng Yan has the experience in establishing and running overseas start-up PV company.
