Our beloved author, Prof. Bashkatov Alexei Nikolaevich, passed away on November 7, 2021at the age of 55 due to a sudden stroke of heart attack. He was an associate professor in the Department of Optics and Biophotonics, Institute of Physics, Saratov State University.
Prof. Bashkatov was born on November 16, 1965 and graduated from the Department of Optics of Saratov State University in 1993, where he spenthisfollowing thirty years therein diligent teaching and solid research. Since 1991, he worked first as an engineer, then as a leading engineer, and since 2002, after successfully defending a thesis, as an associate professor. He was dedicated todiversescientific fields including theoretical and experimental research in the optics of biological tissues, biological and medical physics, biophotonics, biomedical optics, and control of optical parameters of biological tissues etc.
He was renowned globally for his great scientific achievements. He contributedfivearticles related to Tissue Optics and Spectroscopy to JIOHS,one of which is the only highly cited paper in JIOHS at the Web of Science (nearly 400 times), and is also regarded as one of the best papers since the Journal was launched (Ref: Optical properties of skin, subcutaneous, and muscle tissues: a review). His most recent article in JIOHS was published in September 2021 (Ref: Glycerol effects on optical, weight and geometrical properties of skin tissue).
Prof. Bashkatov was one of the members from Prof.Valery V. Tuchin Group in Saratov State University. TheGroup has published over 50 papers in JIOHS and also organized several special issues. Furthermore, it has made significant contributions to global academic exchanges and communications in the field of biomedical optics, especially through the International Conference on Photonics and Imaging in Biology and Medicine (PIBM), which has been the largest international annual conference in the field of biomedical photonics in Asia.
The Editorial Board of JIOHS and the entire Editorial Office express deep condolences to the family and friends of Prof. Bashkatov.
