Special Issue on
Terahertz Technologies and Their Biomedical Applications
This special issue is in connection with the International Symposium on Ultrafast Phenomena and Terahertz Waves (ISUPTW) 2020. Established in 2002, this biennial conference is devoted to strengthening collaboration among researchers and promoting development in the science, technology and application of terahertz (THz) waves. ISUPTW 2020 will be held in Chengdu, China and will bring together researchers from all over the world to showcase their latest achievements and discuss future developments.
Lying between infrared light and millimeter wave, THz wave shows unique spectral properties. Recent years have seen novel THz technologies rapidly developing owing to the advances of sources and detectors. With the unique properties of THz wave, such as with rotational and vibrational spectrum of molecular fingerprints and with low photon energy, THz technologies have shown promising applications in biomedicine. The feasibilities of discovering intra-biomolecular interactions, label-free detection of bacteria and living cells, and in-vivo imaging of cancerous or diseased tissues with THz wave have been tentatively demonstrated. Despite decades of development, THz technologies still face challenges in practical applications. Bio-effect (either thermal or non-thermal) under THz wave illumination is another issue that requires further exploration.
The purpose of this special issue is to highlight these latest developments in both fundamental science and practical applications. This special issue calls for the experts in the field of THz technologies and their biomedical applications to discuss the most recent breakthroughs and the potential impacts in related research fields. Original research papers and review articles are both welcome. Manuscripts will be internationally peer-reviewed. Topics we specifically seek to cover include but are not limited to the following:
Advanced THz technologies, devices and systems;
Novel bioimaging and biosensing based on THz technologies, such as sub-diffraction-limited imaging, ultrasensitive meta-sensor;
Impact of THz wave on bio-molecular, cell or organ;
Application of THz technologies in bio-detection and medical imaging;
Application of THz technologies in disease treatment and therapies;
Other promising biomedical applications of THz technologies.
