2015 marks an important milestone in the history of optics and optical technologies:it marks the 1000th anniversary since the appearance of the remarkable seven volume treatise on optics Kitab al-Manazir written by the Arab scientist Ibn al-Haytham; and it is two hundred years of Fresnel’s Wave Theory; one hundred and fifteen years ago,Maxwell proposed the electromagnetic theory of light propagation; one hundred years ago, in November 1915, Albert Einstein wrote down the famous field equations of General Relativity; fifteen years ago, Penzias and Wilson discovered cosmic microwave background; in the same year Kao proposed transmission of light in optical fibers. Therefore, the United Nations (UN) General Assembly proclaimed 2015 as the International Year of Light and Light-based Technologies (IYL 2015) on December 20th, 2013.

To celebrate the event, Wuhan National Laboratory for Optoelectronics (WNLO), with the support from many world known scientific societies and unions launches Wuhan Photonics Week. With the 8th International Photonics and OptoElectronics Meetings (POEM 2015) as its important part, Wuhan Photonics Week enriches itself with varieties of international and domestic events to be taken place on June 13-19, 2015, including the Collaborative Innovation Symposiums for Photonics (CISP), the 5th Sino-French Forum: Optical Information and Photonics-Electronics Conversion Technique, Cross-strait Optoelectronics Forum, Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition of students, workshops, training courses and Expo, etc.

By combining different disciplines and comprehensive meeting types, Wuhan Photonics Week is also serving as a platform on exchanging information on recent advances and future trends for researchers and to boost brand for the enterprises. We aim at bringing together the leading minds in the science and application of light to share their advancements, making important connections, and inspiring further developments in critical research fields.

The domestic conferences CISP is a series of academic symposiums including topics on Optical Communications, Information Photonics, Storage Technology of the Next Generation Data Center, Laser Technology & Its Application, and the International Investing Conference for Photonics Optoelectronics Technology Transfer, will be held on June 13- 18, 2015.

International Photonics and OptoElectronics Meetings(POEM)is launched by WNLO with seven successful precedents, the 8th POEM is to be held on June 16-19, 2015, Wuhan, China, hosted by WNLO and OSA.POEM 2015 features two OSA Topical Meetings: Optoelectronic Devices and Integration (OEDI) and Photonics for Energy (PFE). OEDI topics include silicon photonics, surface plasma and plasmonics, optoelectronic devices, nonlinear optical devices, polymer devices, radio over fiber related devices, free-space communications related devices, optoelectronic monolithic integration and hybrid integration, and optical vortex devices and subsystems. Prof. Jesper Moerk from Technical University of Denmark and Xinliang Zhang from Huazhong University of Science and Technology will co-chair the topical meeting. Topical meeting PFE, chaired by Michael Grätzel from Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne and Zhonglin Wang from Georgia Institute of Technology, covers such topics as energy generation (mesoscopic, organic, quantum dot and thin film solar cells, nanogenerators), energy conversion (inorganic/organic light emitting diodes, piezo-phototronics) and energy storage.

Joint forums includes the 5th Sino-French Forum with the title “Optical Information and Photoelectric Conversion” on June 15 and Cross-strait Optoelectronics Forum from June 14 to 16.On June 15, the Workshop on Development of Optics Journal  has invited some delegates from Thomson Reuters and Nature Publishing Group, Institute of Physics Publishing and editors from high-quality journals related to optics and photonics, such as Light: Science & Applications, Optics Letters, Photonics Research and so on to give talks for junior scientists and graduates on how to prepare and submit manuscript to appropriate journal and how to use some database for scientific research. Nature Master Classes from June 19 to 20 (7 hours per day) will give interactive training session on scientific writing by 2 editors from NPG.

Training courses on Advanced Analysis Techniques on Materials: Transmission (& Scanning) Electron Microscopy, on Optical imaging in nervous system and immunology and on Electron Beam Lithography will be held from June 13 to 15. All the trainings will include both classroom lectures and practical hands-on instruction. The trainings will be held on Nanoscale Characterization & Devices Research Platform, Biomedical Photonics Imaging Research Platform, Optoelectronic Micronanoelectronic Manufacturing Process Platform, WNLO separately.

Annual Meeting of OSA/SPIE Student Chapters in China & Innovation Venture Competition is from June 15 to 18. The objective of this activity is to guide and inspire students to combine the knowledge they have learned in class with the reality of society, to help them pursuing innovation, creation and imagination. The competition consists of a preliminary and a final: in preliminary, participants are supposed to provide a work (i) The academic thesis of natural science class or (ii) The invention of production technology; after evaluation, winners will take part in the finals. Jianquan Yao, member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and Min Gu, Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science (FAA), the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering (FTSE) will give lectures.

This year, our Wuhan Photonics Week including the POEM 2015 will attract almost 1000 participants. To enhance the industry-university-research cooperation and the diversification of academic conference, POEM 2015 include Expo from June 15 to 18 for the enterprises to boost their brand.

With the help of all the supporters, Wuhan Photonics Weekof the International Year of the Light has been in steady preparation and the opening ceremony will be held at the A101 conference room of WNLO at 14:30 pm on June 13, which will be followed by Wuhan Optoelectronics Forum and CISP of Wuhan Photonics Week. The lecture “Development of World’s Optical Fiber Communication and Profile of Chinese information industry” that will be given by Zisen Zhao, member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE), will mark the opening of the Collaborative Innovation Symposium on Information Photonics.
