Wuhan Optoelectronics Forum No.165 was successfully held in the form of live stream online meeting in the afternoon of May 27. Professor Jianrong Qiu from Zhejiang University delivered an exciting presentation entitled ‘How do we do scientific research?—Inspiration from the interaction between femtosecond laser and matter’. Professor Jun Zhou, Deputy Director of Wuhan National Laboratory for Optoelectronics (WNLO), chaired the forum, and awarded the forum medal to Professor Jianrong Qiu.
First of all, taking his own experience as an example, Professor Qiu shared his attitude towards scientific research. How should we do scientific research and how should we enjoy it? These were two major questions concerned by Professor Qiu. He believed doing scientific research should not only aiming at the forefront of international science, facing the major national needs, or competing in the main battlefield of the national economy, but the most important thing is to fulfill your missions, recognize your ambitions, interests, and abilities. Then Professor Qiu introduced the research direction of his team—photonic materials and devices, including three specific directions: photonic glasses and devices, luminescent and nonlinear optical materials, and ultrafast laser interaction with materials. Furthermore, Professor Qiu introduced the properties and applications of femtosecond laser, the observed phenomena of ultrafast laser and rare earth materials interactions, and the principles and properties of 3D colored inner carving. In the end, Professor Qiu concluded his research experience, shared the joy of scientific research and his perception of life, and encouraged young students to cherish their scientific goals.
Qiu Jianrong is currently a Qiu Shi professor and doctoral tutor in the School of Optoelectronic Science and Engineering of Zhejiang University. Before Zhejiang University, he served as the Distinguished Professor and Ph.D. Supervisor of Yangtze River in Ministry of Education from 2009 - 2015, School of Materials Science and Engineering of South China University of Technology, and Distinguished Professor and Doctor of Qiushi from School of Materials and Chemical Engineering of Zhejiang University, 2005-2009 Student tutor. His research direction is photonic materials and devices, mainly including photonic glasses and devices, luminescent and NL optical materials, and laser interaction with materials.
Qiu Jianrong, was awarded the National Outstanding Youth Fund in 2001, and was selected as the Distinguished Professor of the Yangtze River by the Ministry of Education in 2008. He is currently the leader of the "Glass Fiber Materials and Devices" innovation team of the Ministry of Education. His team is mainly engaged in the research of functional glass, ultrafast laser-glass interaction and phosphor materials. More than 500 papers in SCI have been published so far (International authoritative journals such as Adv. Mater., J. Am. Chem. Soc., Angew. Chem. Int. Ed., Phys. Rev. Lett., Nano Lett. And other impact factors 215 articles greater than 3), cited 9180 times by SCI. Applied 125 patents and authorized 54 (4 overseas). 52 conference or invitation reports at international conferences such as OECC. 8 research results were introduced by Nature's Science update. In 1999, he received the Adachi Prize of the Japan Rare Earth Society (1 per year). In 2005, he won the International Otto-Schott Research Award (the only Chinese), and in 2007 won the Academic Award of the Japanese Ceramic Association (the first Chinese). He is also the Associate Editor-in-Chief or Editor-in-Chief of Chinese Journal of Silicate, J. Non-Cryst. Solids, Int. J. Appl.
