Abstract:
Silicon based convergence of microelectronics and optoelectronics allows new opportunities in a series of important applications, including telecommunication , fiber to the home , board to board interconnects, on chip optical clock distribution for faster computers, high resolution night vision arrays, switching of optical nodes , contact free separation of different supply voltages, sensors for bio- and medical applications, etc. In this talk the essential components of such systems and their physical functions are explained. From the given maturity of different components the possible near future solutions are discussed and evaluated. Heterostructure engineering based on the material system Silicon/Germanium (Si/ Ge) is of key importance for practical solutions.
