Laser, together with atomic energy, semiconductor and computer, are collectively regarded as the four major modern inventions in the 20th century. It has not only largely accelerated the advances of industrial technologies, but also plays an important role in the developments of high-end equipment manufacturing, new generation of electronic information, frontier biomedicine and other emerging industries. Therefore, advanced laser technologies have drawn great attention in every country, which greatly promotes the developments of the laser-related industries. Focusing on the recent development of the fiber laser technologies and urgent requests of industrial applications, we discuss the future of ultrafast fiber laser and single-frequency fiber laser, as well as related frontier researches and applications.
