Wuhan Optoelectronics Forum 196: Characterization and Modeling of Perovskite Solar Cells

Time:Oct 20, 2023

An inspiring report entitled Characterization and Modeling of Perovskite Solar Cells was given by Prof. Wolfgang Tress in Wuhan Optoelectronics Forum No.196, which was on 16th October 2023 in the Auditorium C117 at Wuhan National Laboratory for Optoelectronics (WNLO). Prof. Xiong Li chaired the forum and Prof. Jian Wang, Deputy Director of WNLO awarded the forum medal to Prof. Tress.

Prof. Tress introduced the theme of this forum, starting from two fundamental issues: defects in single-junction perovskite solar cells and transient effects in perovskite optoelectronic devices. He discussed how to correlate various measurement data with device performance through in-situ and in-operando measurements. These measurements included photoluminescence and electroluminescence, photoelectron transient measurements, impedance spectroscopy, as well as nano and micro-scale characterization based on Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM). The materials studied included light-induced phase separation in lead halide perovskites and lead-free double perovskite materials. The discussed devices encompassed solar cells, devices under reverse bias, and light-emitting diodes under pulsed operation, combined with device simulations and data-driven modeling. The focus of the presentation was on the role of mixed ion-electron conductivity in device operation and how to identify processes that limit performance.

After the report, there was a deep two-way exchange and discussion between the audience and Prof. Tress about the hot topics.

Wolfgang Tress is a Prof. at Zurich University of Applied Sciences (ZHAW) and leads a research team on novel semiconductor devices funded by the European Research Council (ERC). He is a renowned expert in the fields of renewable energy and semiconductor materials, focusing on the characterization and modeling of advanced semiconductor materials and photovoltaic devices. In recent years, he has dedicated his research to the device physics of perovskite materials and mixed ion-electron conductivity. Before joining ZHAW, Prof. Tress served as an SNSF Ambizione researcher at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne (EPFL) and a Marie Curie Scholar at the University of Munich, Germany. He has authored a monograph based on his doctoral thesis at the Technical University of Dresden and postdoctoral research in the team of Prof. Olle Inganas at Linköping University, Sweden, on organic solar cells. He has published more than 70 articles with over 30,000 total citations and is recognized as a highly cited researcher according to the Web of Science.
