On the morning of 9th October 2023, invited by Prof. Peixiang Lu, Executive Deputy Director of Wuhan National Laboratory for Optoelectronics (WNLO), Prof. Jiansheng Liu from Shanghai Normal University visited WNLO and gave a talk on “Progress in Laser Electron Acceleration and Novel Radiation Sources” at the 193rd Wuhan Optoelectronics Forum.
First, Prof. Pengfei Lan, Director of the Ultrafast Optics Laboratory of Huazhong University of Science and Technology, gave a warm introduction to Prof. Liu, including his research interests and academic contributions. Then, Prof. Lu presented him with the forum medal, and the report officially began.
Prof. Liu introduced a new scheme to achieve electron beam energy spread compression by designing and constructing a special gas density distribution, as well as methods to obtain high-energy high-quality electron beams by controlling electron injection, energy chirp control and compensation. He also detailed the breakthrough progress they made in free-electron lasers based on laser electron acceleration - based on wakefield-accelerated electron beams, they achieved the first demonstration of all-optical XFEL in the world, obtaining soft X-ray free-electron laser output with gain amplification. At the end of the report, Prof. Liu shared some new discoveries, new mechanisms and new results in coherent control experiments of laser-plasma interactions.
Prof. Liu is a professor at Shanghai Normal University and a recipient of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars. He is engaged in ultrafast laser science and strong field ultrafast optics research. He has achieved a number of breakthrough research results in laser electron acceleration, laser-driven strong terahertz radiation, coherent control of laser-plasma interactions and new phenomena and effects of femtosecond laser filamentation. He has published more than 140 papers in core SCI journals, such as Nature, Nature Photonics, Physical Review Letters, etc. Some of his research results were selected as one of the “Representative Works of Chinese Scientists in 2011”, important achievements of Chinese optics in 2011 and 2016, and top ten advances in Chinese optics in 2017, 2019 and 2021. As one of the main contributors, he won the first prize of Shanghai Natural Science Award in 2010 and the first prize of Shanghai Science and Technology Progress Award in 2013. He was awarded the Shanghai Outstanding Academic Leader in 2012, the National Natural Science Foundation of China “Outstanding Young Scientist Fund” in 2014, and the “Government Special Allowance” from the State Council in 2016.
